Buyers Care Guide

Delivery care guide

After purchasing your Discus we recommend you follow these guidelines.Prior to the arrival of your order please note the we keep our discus in the following:
  • Temp 30°C [~86°F]; 300mS*; pH 6.5
  •  3:1 [Reverse Osmosis water:CBR water] mix
This is our preference - you may have other ideas/preferences etc. If you water varies considerably please allow for a greater acclimatisation time.Once your purchase has arrived
  1. Open the box and make a preliminary inspection - phone SED immediately if you have any questions re your purchase.
  2. Ensure you tank lights are off . It is advisable that they remain off for the next 24 hours to allow the fish to settle in.
  3. Float the bag in the tank for approximately 10 minutes to allow the water temperature to equalise between the bag and your tank.
  4. Once the temperature has equalised, open the bag carefully and add a small amount of tank water into the bag at regular intervals (about 100ml ever 10 minutes or so) whilst the bag is kept floating in the tank. This allows time for the fish to acclimatise themselves to any pH difference between: the water in the bag, and your tank.
  5. Once you are satisfied that the fish have acclimatised, tilt the bag and allow the fish to swim out into the tanks. Please remember that the more patient you are with step 4 the less stressful the transition from tank to bag.
  6. The tank lights should remain off until the following day whilst the fish adjust to their new environment.
  7. 24 hours after placing the fish in your tank you may switch the lights on. Allow 30 minutes to an hour for the fish to adjust to the lights before adding any food to the tanks. Their first food should be something that discus find difficult to resist e.g. live/frozen brine shrimp etc.
Please note that many fish will eat the day after transport; a few will take 2-5 days before they are tempted. At this stage it is important to remember to be patient and remove any uneaten food that remains in the tanks, half an hour after feeding. If  you have any further queries re your purchase please telephone me on 01622 872 117
  • (whilst mS does not translate directly into hardness measured by the average drop tester - many find a GH of between 6-8° and a KH of about 4° to be acceptable for keeping discus)
